Topiramate
Topiramate is an anticonvulsant and is commonly used for the treatment of seizures or migraines, but studies have shown that patients lost more weight with topiramate alone than with placebo. And even more weight is lost when combined with phentermine.
In 2012, the FDA approved a combination of phentermine and topiramate, better known as Qsymia. The down side to Qsymia is that, often times, insurance will not cover this medication and it can be fairly expensive.
Here, we prescribe phentermine and topiramate separately making it more cost effective and easier to adjust dosing to achieve optimal results.
Possible side effects include:
-
Paresthesia
-
Fatigue
-
Drowsiness
-
Memory impairment
-
Changes in taste
-
Visual changes
